LIBESKIND DESIGN SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR FRENCH SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION

Tour Signal in Paris  Planned to be 310-Meter (95-Story) Building and Model of Sustainable Development

Daniel Libeskind is among five finalists selected to move forward in the competition to design the Tour Signal, a 310-meter skyscraper (approximately 52 floors) that will be developed in the burgeoning business district of La Défense in Paris. The announcement was made earlier this week by EPAD, a public institution established to promote the development of La Défense, during the MIPIM 2008 international property trade show in Cannes, France.

“A showcase for the prestige, the success and the dynamism of France, La Défense must become a laboratory for all the bold innovation and architectural ambition that have for too long been absent in our country,” said Patrick Devedjian, president of EPAD in a prepared statement. “To symbolize this ‘new La Défense’, [French president] Nicolas Sarkozy wanted a Tour Signal, a monument symbolic of the third millennium, remarkable in its architecture, innovative in the diversity of its use and an indisputable reference in matters of sustainable development.”

EPAD presented the teams composed of architects and investors who will participate in the final stages of the contest. The winning projects are:

·        Studio Daniel Libeskind Architect with ORCO PROPERTY GROUPE

·        Foster + Partners Ltd with Compagnie La Lucette

·        Jacques Ferrier Architectures with Hermitage

·        Ateliers Jean Nouvel with MEDEA Layetana Desarollos Immobiliarios

·        Wilmotte et Associés SA with Groupe Financière Centuria/Bouygues Immobilier

One of the goals of the Tour Signal is to become a model of sustainable development, building to the green standards of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and HQE (High Quality Environmental).

In July 2007, EPAD launched an international call for projects for the construction of the Tour Signal. More than thirty architecture/development teams responded to the call for projects. The winning project is expected to be announced in April 2008. For details, visit http://www.tour-signal-ladefense.com/en/index.html.
