Studio Daniel Libeskind has recently been recognized for the extension to the existing Denver Art Museum and the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, England.
“I am delighted that Condé Nast Traveler Magazine has seen fit to bestow the honor of one of the ‘New Wonders of the World,’ on the Denver Art Museum, and that the Tourism Oscars granted the Imperial War Museum North the prestigious Silver Award for ‘Large Visitor Attraction of the Year,’” Daniel Libeskind said. “I believe that design and architecture are the foremost communicators of all—they tell a story. For me, architecture tells a story about the world, our desires and dreams. The buildings I create, are much more than a place, they are destinations meant to evoke emotion and to make you think about the world we all live in.”
Denver Art Museum, Frederic C. Hamilton Building
The extension to the Denver Art Museum, the Frederic C. Hamilton Building, was named one of five “New Wonders of the World” by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine in their April 2007 issue. The Denver Art Museum represents the only location honored in the United States. “The New Wonders of the World” were celebrated in Condé Nast Traveler Magazine as “buildings ahead of their time” and a “new crop of architectural opuses.”
Currently housing the Modern and Contemporary art collections, as well as the collection of Oceanic and African Art, the Frederic C. Hamilton Building has also become the main entrance to the entire museum complex, complete with a representative lobby granting access to shops, a café, and a theater.
“The vitality and growth of Denver were inspirations to the design of the new museum,” Mr. Libeskind said. “With a breathtaking view of the Rocky Mountains and the sky, the dialogue between the boldness of construction and the romanticism of the landscape creates a unique place.”
Imperial War Museum North
Studio Daniel Libeskind’s Imperial War Museum North also recently won a prestigious Silver Award for “Large Visitor Attraction of the Year,” at the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2007. The annual tourism “Oscars” recognize the best of England’s tourism where competitors are rigorously assessed and must demonstrate excellence against strict criteria.
Since opening to visitors in July 2002, Imperial War Museum North has attracted over 1,350,000 visitors. The entire Museum composition is built on reclaimed brownfield, developing an environmentally sustainable building on land thought unusable. The building is the interlocking of three shards, representing Earth, Air, and Water, constituting the various functions of the Museum.
“The Imperial War Museum North deals with the conflicts that have shaped the 20th century and those which will continue to shape the future,” Mr. Libeskind said. “The building brings together culture and regeneration, craft and design, in order to give the public a striking emblem which, in an instant, illuminates both tradition and the new.”
