Copenhagen, Denmark
Ørestad is the largest and most ambitious urban development in the Copenhagen area. Located just South of the historic city centre, it consists of a narrow 5 km long development zone bound by a 25 square kilometer nature reserve on the West and the elevated light-rail tracks. It was conceived as series of neighborhoods, located along the light-rail line like pearls on a string.
The Master Plan was conceived not only in outline, but as a 3-dimensional composition. Buildings of 6, 8 and 11 stories are grouped around courtyards, with two towers forming the core of the urban composition. The towers, with their curved and canted facades, are the main landmark of the site. While they are detached from the lower buildings, these towers maintain a dialogue with each other. Like the spires of the historical city of Copenhagen they are an indication, from a distance, of an important public gathering place. A cultural component is being proposed as a visual landmark and a visitor destination.
On the South side are the entrances to a hotel with its conference and leisure facilities, as well as to the cinema. Activity-generating common services are to be located on the ground floor of the building towards Centergade. The South façade of Field’s is proposed to be opened with new shop fronts and a new reorganized floor plan, allowing for an additional entrance from the new plaza.
Continuing the sequence to the West, a new open piazza is being created as the central public forum. An ellipsoid platform, paved on the North side and landscaped on the South side, it gives access to the cultural institution, to both towers and to a vertical connection to the parking below.
